Merida Island Base

Kaname Chidori is a Japanese girl, age 16. As with all of the Whispereds, she was born December 24th, 1981, or 1984 in the anime. She is described as having a mature look, seeming more like someone in their early years of college than a junior in high school. She attends Jindai Municipal High School, where she is Student Council Vice President as well as the Class Representative of Class 2-4.

Her childhood was one with adversity, always at odds with her father. When she was just seven years old, she ran away from home, though she was found within hours and returned. At age 9, her family moved from Chofu to New York when her father accepted the newly created position of High Commissioner of Environmental Protection at the United Nations. She had to learn English quickly, and this made for a difficult time adjusting. During this time, her mother fell ill with cancer.

When she was 13, her family made a temporary move back to Tokyo, still in ownership of the condo in Chofu where Kaname had grown up. It was not long after they moved when Shizu died. Kaname was very angry during this time, often destroying property and getting into arguments at school. She was ostracized by her classmates in middle school, too 'American' for them, and her anger not making things easier. She became suicidal during this time, though her attitude changed and she no longer wanted to punish herself for it, but to fight against what made her feel that way.

In high school, she got something of a fresh start, and immediately hit it off with Kyouko during the entrance ceremony. Her father moved back to New York with her younger sister not long after she began high school. To combat her loneliness, she takes on as many responsibilities as she could, also a member of the Softball Club and having a parttime job waitressing at a cafe. She is also able to make amends with her mother's father, regaining some contact with her family, however little.

At Jindai, she is known as "the prettiest girl you would never want to date." Her attitude still puts people off at times, but she has a much easier time getting along with others. She has many people asking her out, and she rebuffs all of them. The only times she goes on any dates are when they set one up through Kyouko, though that stopped once Sousuke entered the picture.

She is a fighter, strong for a civilian, and this often gains her the admiration of Sousuke and the others at Mithril. Though she certainly isn't immune to grieving over situations and complaining, she never lets it overcome her, always looking for resolutions. Emotionally, however, she is weak, often succumbing to insecurities and easily believing the worst of a situation out of a desire not to be hurt.

A Whispered, her specialties lie in Lambda Driver applications. She is presumed to be the inventor of the Fairy's Eye, which allows any unit equipped with it to view where the Lambda Driver is active. She hid away in the villa in Mexico a disk with the plans for the Fairy Feather, retrieved by Sousuke after the failed attempt to recover her. The Fairy Feather works as an anti-Lambda Driver, but it causes heavy load on the AS, making it possible to use only for short spurts of time.

She is also the only one who can meld with Sofia, the Whisperer. When in Yamsk11, she finds what remains of the woman's body where her consciousness is strongest, and is taken over. In a seeming last act of defiance, she manipulates the strong presence of Tau waves to protect Sousuke and Tessa, leading them to believe that she shot the both of them. It tricks even Sofia into believing they are dead as she then tricks herself into thinking she is even Kaname herself. She holds only a minor control of herself after that, up until Sousuke begins talking to her over an open channel, taunting her into unburying her consciousness and taking control of her own self once more.
