All the Whispered were born on December 24, 1981 at 11:50pm GMT. Deep within the Soviet Union at a secret facility dubbed Yamsk11, construction began years earlier to create a machine that would allow scientists a way to tear through time and space and see into the future. The device was engineered through the efforts of several of the greatest minds supplied from the Soviet Union, and hooking up hundreds of dolphin brains. It was a primitive TAROS, using the brains to amplify it, and this original version was called a "Mental Communication Device." Dmitri Barov was the lead scientist, subjecting his own daughter to horrific experiments that left her severely nutrient deprived and in a horrid state of health - both mental and physical.

Placing Sofia into the TAROS, the device malfunctioned and was active for only three minutes, subjecting Sofia to horrible pain the entire time. An explosion was triggered, resulting in powerful psychic waves erupting from the machine. The first and strongest were Iota waves, spreading over 30km and outright killing some, while driving others to madness and leaving no survivors. Thankfully, these powerful waves dissipated quickly.

The second type were Tau waves, which managed to spread over the world, affecting infants born at 11:50pm GMT. These Tau waves still linger, strong in Yamsk11 where they originated, and are the source of intense deja vu felt on site. It also seems that they carry with them information from the future, allowing the Whispered access to advanced technology.

Sofia died as a result of the malfunction, but because of her connection to the TAROS, she became the one transmitting the information to each and every Whispered across the globe, though it seems her consciousness has been scattered throughout time into both the future and the past. She is known as the Whispering.

Each Whispered was granted extensive knowledge of different scientific and mathematical fields. As described by Gauron: “Each Whispered is wired differently, so the kid has to be tested to figure out the value. If a kid in Tokyo knows everything about the Lambda Driver, there might be one in Sicily who knows about submarines and nothing else.” Aside from the increased intellectual activity, the Whispered are able to communicate with each other in a kind of telepathy called Resonance.

Unlike most assumed forms of telepathy, in which those with ability can read each others thoughts, Resonance is more aptly described as ‘mind-sharing’, and can be dangerous for both parties over long periods of time. The longer two Whispereds Resonate with each other, the more their minds begin to mix and blend together, as described by Tessa with her example of adding milk to her tea. A secondary ability of the Whispered, is the ability to see slightly further into the future, though they must resonate with a TAROS to perform this. Leonard Testarossa is the only known Whispered to test this ability, and used the information gained to coordinate and perform the simultaneous attack on Mithril bases around the world, as well as any known cover companies.
